The Edward Betham C of E Primary School

Physical Education

Intent

PE at Edward Betham is grounded in the Christian values of faith, hope, and love. We want children to believe in their ability to succeed and to encourage one another as they take part in healthy competition against either themselves (personal best) or other children. We believe that physical education, experienced in a safe and supportive environment, is essential for children to attain optimum physical and emotional development, good health and overall well-being. We aim to develop a love of sport and physical activity in all children and inspire them to become lifelong active people when they leave our school.  We encourage children to adopt a positive growth mindset and to believe that anything can be achieved with determination and resilience. Our curriculum aims to improve the well-being and fitness of all children, not only through the sporting skills taught, but through the underpinning values and disciplines PE promotes. We aim to deliver high quality teaching and learning opportunities that enable all children to succeed in physical education and develop life skills, such as swimming and teamwork, that align with our Christian values. Opportunities to participate in external sporting competitions are prioritised and are open to a wide range of children.

Implementation

  • PE at Edward Betham  teaches a range of sporting activities, including invasion games, net & wall games, strike and field games, gymnastics, dance, swimming, and outdoor & adventure, all of which are taught with a focus on promoting Christian values of faith, hope, and love
  • Our curriculum sets out the PE units which are to be taught throughout the year and ensures that the requirements of the National Curriculum are fully met
  • At EYFS pupils explore a range of physical activity including use of apparatus, athletics, ball skills, yoga and dance.  Pupils begin to develop the skills that they will build on throughout KS1 and KS2
  • Pupils at KS1 and KS2 participate in two high-quality PE lessons each week.   One lesson is taught by the class teacher and one lesson is taught by a specialist coach
  • Lessons are planned to develop skills over a number a sessions and, at KS2, they focus on at least one sporting discipline every half term in Key Stage 2
  • Children are encouraged to participate in the varied range of extra-curricular activities that are offered at the school.  At KS2, lunchtime sports are facilitated each day by a specialist sports coach
  • Children from across the school are invited to attend both competitive and non-competitive sporting events within the local area.  These fixtures encourage physical development, mental well-being, teamwork, and leadership skills, all of which align with our Christian values
  • The school is well supported as part of the Willow Tree School Sports Partnership. The subject lead receives regular training and support and CPD can be planned and delivered by specialists
  • Each year, a small group of Year 6 children are invited to become Sports Ambassadors for the school, who serve as sporting role models for the younger children, assisting with lunch-time sports, our annual Sports Day, and any other sporting activities
  • Children participate in workshops covering a variety of sports throughout the year, providing them with opportunities to develop their skills, improve their fitness, and try new things
  • Children in Year 4 swim once a week for 10 weeks during the Autumn or Spring Term. For pupils who are still unable to swim, additional sessions are provided in the summer term of Year 6

Impact

Children have opportunities to participate in a variety of sports through quality teaching that is engaging and fun, while also promoting our Christian values of faith, hope and love. Children develop a good understanding of their responsibility for maintaining their own health and fitness and how regular exercise helps with this. Our pupils are physically active, and this has a positive impact on their learning in the classroom. We equip our children with necessary skills and a love for sport, which will help them grow up to live happy and healthy lives, utilising the skills and knowledge acquired through PE. Many children have the opportunity to represent the school at a sporting fixture and develop a pride in the school and belief in their own ability as a result. The majority of our pupils meet the expected level of the National Curriculum requirements and most leave school with the skills to competently swim at least 25m and with a knowledge of how to keep themselves safe in water.
