Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship Education (PSHCE)

Intent

Through the PSHCE curriculum at Edward Betham we equip children with the skills required to become healthy, independent and responsible members of society. It helps them to understand how they develop personally and socially, whilst also tackling many social, moral and cultural issues that are part of growing up. We provide opportunities for the children to learn about rights and responsibilities and equip them to make good choices as they grow. PSHCE supports many of the principles of safeguarding and links closely to SMSC, British Values and our Christian vision with its associated values. Our children are encouraged to develop their sense of self-worth by contributing to school life and the wider community.

Implementation

PSHCE is taught weekly from Nursery through to Year 6.
Pupils in Reception to Year 6 follow the Ealing PSHE Scheme of Work which is a clear and comprehensive scheme of work in line with the National Curriculum. There are five lessons in each half term unit.
In EYFS, PSHCE is taught under the specific area of learning called Personal, Social and Emotional Development. It is one of the 7 areas of learning and is crucial to a child achieving a good level of development at the end of their EYFS journey
The Ealing Scheme of work maps the learning into 3 key themes ( Health and Wellbeing, Living in the Wider World, Relationships) comprehensively covering the statutory Health and Wellbeing Education guidance
Topics are revisited across year groups and understanding is deepened
In addition to our Relationships Education, we also teach aspects of sex education as identified by the National Curriculum as part of our science curriculum.
Children are taught about different kinds of relationships so that our children have a full understanding of the world in which they live. This is taught sensitively whilst supporting our Christian values
Pupils develop their sense of self-worth by playing a positive role in contributing to school life and the wider community. Children to look for opportunities to demonstrate our school vision of faith, hope and love
Children with SEND are supported to access PSHCE learning through high-quality, teacher-led quality first teaching, following guidance from the SEND code of practice. Teaching is personalised to suit their individual needs.
Circle time is used by teachers weekly to address issues and to provide a safe place to share feelings
Teachers record PSHCE learning weekly using a class floor book. Floor books include the learning intention, a brief description of the lesson and samples of the children’s work. In Upper Key Stage 2 children themselves take responsibility for adding pupil voice to their learning. Floor books are used to support retrieval practice over the course of the year
Ongoing formative assessment of pupils, both self-assessment and teacher led, informs the ongoing sequence of lessons and enables teachers to plan how to revisit prior learning and help support individual children.

Impact

The meaningful PSCHE curriculum at Edward Betham is the key factor in enabling our children to become healthy and responsible members of society, equipped with the knowledge and skills to make the right choices in society. Children approach a range of real-life situations and apply their skills and attributes to help navigate themselves through modern life. They demonstrate and apply the British values of democracy, tolerance, mutual respect, rule of law and liberty. Our children display a healthy outlook towards school and their learning and as a result attendance in school is good and the majority achieve age related expectations. Pupils leave us ready for their next step into secondary school and are armed with skills, knowledge and understanding that they can take forward into adulthood.
